Spring 2005
Burn and Grass Response--Howard County

Pilcher-Mortenson-Dodson Complex
Southeast Lincoln County-Curtis, Nebraska

Random Sample of 40 1-acre plots showed the following:
*1958- 3.2% canopy cover                *2003- 24.3% canopy cover
*21.1% change in canopy cover over 45 years (47% increase per year)

Extrapolate to entire area (1,451.64 acres):
*1958- 46.70 acres of cedar canopy cover         *2003- 353.18 acres of cedar canopy cover
*306.48 acre increase in cedar canopy cover over 45 years (6.81 acres/year)

Part of the Pilcher plot was worked (used for crops, hay, etc. after 1958.  These areas do not provide an accurate assessment of the cedar canopy over the entire span of time.  By excluding these areas from the analysis, we get a better picture of the actual change that is occurring.  (See following results.)

Actively Encroaching Area
* Part of the Pilcher plot had been worked (cropped, hayed, trees removed since 1948.
* The Random Sample was clipped to actively encroaching area (32.86 acres)
   < 1958- 3.9% canopy cover       < 2003- 29.4% canopy cover        < 25.5% change in canopy cover over 45 years

*Extrapolate to active encroachment area (1,235.63 acres)
< 1958- 48.05 acres of cedar canopy cover            < 2003- 363.78 acres of cedar canopy cover
< 315.73 acre increase in cedar canopy cover over 45 years (7.02 acres/year)
