August 12, 2025

Thank you to all who stopped by the Groundwater Guardian’s Outdoor Learning Area for the Monarch Tagging Event at the Nebraska State Fair!

We tagged 4 male and 2 female Monarchs. If you’d like to track the butterflies that were tagged, visit https://monarchwatch.org/
Their ID #s are: Alph125, Alph126, Alph127, Alph128, Alph129, Alph130
The Groundwater Guardians, Central Platte NRD, Central Community College and Conservation Nebraska look forward to hosting another event next year!

Have you ever tagged a butterfly? Now’s your chance!

Join the Central Platte NRD, Central Community College, Grand Island Groundwater Guardian Team and Conservation Nebraska on Wednesday, August 27th at the Nebraska State Fair for an exciting, hands-on adventure!

Entomologist Dr. Crystal Ramm, Central Community College-Ord, and Environmental Sustainability Director Ben Newton, Central Community College-Grand Island, will lead the event. The CCC Science Faculty will show you how to safely catch Monarchs, tag them for research, and learn fascinating facts about their journey.

We’ll also have educational materials on the Monarch Watch Program and how you can track the Monarch that you tag. There’s no cost to help catch, tag, and release these beautiful butterflies. Butterfly nets will be provided.  Monarch Watch Tagging Program

Since the tagging program began in 1992, thousands of people have tagged over two million Monarchs. More than 20,000 tag recoveries have been received from the overwintering sites in Mexico.

Be part of the migration story. Join us at the Nebraska State Fair and follow the incredible path your Monarch takes – after it leaves your hands.

You’ll find us in the gazebo at the Groundwater Guardian’s Outdoor Learning Area, near the Kidz Zone, on Wednesday, August 27th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
